Started in 2001, the .NAME extension is the sole TLD intended for personal web pages only. These domains can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. At the beginning, just 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to reserve john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already acquired 3rd-level domain names remained active.
